Recycling Your Gently Used Bras

Recycling Your Gently Used Bras

There is an organization called the Bra Recyclers who will take your used bras that are still in good condition.  For those who don’t know, the fashion industry leaves a large carbon footprint on the planet and the textile industry in general wastes large amounts of water to produce clothing. There is also the argument that we women truly only wear a couple bras in their wardrobe compared to how many bras we actually buy. Instead of them being thrown away into the landfill they can be donated to the Bra Recyclers. Not only will this reduce waste but the bras themselves are donated to women and girls in shelters and natural disaster victims. You can help women who have rain from domestic violence, girls who have been save from sex trafficking, and people like those who lost their homes in the recent wildfires in California. I will link their website down below which will give you further instructions on what you need to do to donate your bras and help you find possible drop off locations. Honestly, what’s better than being eco-friendly and being able to help those in need (nothing). Halloween Thrift 2018

Halloween Thrift 2018

Tis the season to be celebrate not only filling up on candy but to get the greatest deals in the greenest ways. I’m urging anyone who loves Halloween as much as I do to check out their local thrift store. I personally found some new decorations and there was an entire wall filled with costumes. This is great for those who don’t want to spend money on a ridiculous high price for a costume that may be worn once but who also don’t have time to design one. There are also options for those like me who like to throw together costumes from used pieces throughout the store. Below are pictures of some finds that save me money when I was searching for spooky items for my “Kinda Scary Halloween Party.”

Whether, it’s from old or modern there are so many cool things you can find if you just take the time to check out the local thrift stores in your area. Not only will you save money but you could find some interesting pieces that no one else will have. Being green is unique! Have fun out there Codegreeners and above all be safe on this haunted holiday. Check out my other links below and I can’t wait to blog again!

Forming Eco Habits for the Future

Forming Eco Habits for the Future

One of the greatest decisions a person can make is to join the green side of life and choose to make greener choices for the planet. However, I know that this can be a frustrating process when you’re trying to establish newly found habits, so I’m here to tell you that it’s okay. There are plenty of times you will mess up and I personally still make mistakes when it comes to trying to live a greener life. There are many people who live the ultimate zero waste lifestyle through minimalism but that can be hard living in the city or having a large family. Starting with small habits such as using cloth bags at the grocery rather than using the single use plastic bags will make a difference. Small habits can than lead to bigger goals like creating all your own soaps or having completely no trash consumption in your household. The trick is just to remember that your effort is what can make a difference for the life in your area and around the world. Never forget that one small choice leads to big change. Reducing Before Recycling

Reducing Before Recycling

I run the recycling program at my work place, and because of this I always receive many questions on the subject. However, many forget that recycling should be the last option in the steps to living waste free. In order to be successful, a person must follow the first step in the cycle, which is to reduce the amount of waste produced from the beginning. There are several ways that I listed below that we all can do in order to decrease our impact and head towards a zero waste future:

  1. Reducing food packaging

One of the biggest creators of waste are trips to the grocery store; from the packaging, this food is actually in to the packaging that we use to carry the food home in. However, this can be reduced by buying fresh fruits and vegetables rather than those in plastic or processed, buying from local farmers markets, using cloth bags rather than plastic for carrying food, and of course growing food from your own backyard. Whether it’s growing your own herbs or raising chickens in your backyard, every little independent effort can decrease packaging waste from food. As well, most groceries will take a couple cents off for each reusable bag of your own you use rather then theirs.

2. Planning Ahead for Going Out

If you go any place in public from a restaurant to a concert, there are always temptations for producing trash. Creating a plan and thinking ahead will help defend against creating unecessary waste when you’re out enjoying life. There are several ways to combat this issue by asking for no straw (if you need a straw you can always bring a reusable one from home which I tend to do), bringing a reusable bottle, bringing your own cloth tissue or napkin, bringing your own silverware, and even your own to go box. Now I know this is hard to remember but if you plan ahead you can largely reduce your impact by the end of your evening. There are even places such as Starbucks who will allow you to put drink orders in your reusable cup and will reduce the price of your drink by doing this.

3. Buying Used Rather than New

Don’t get me wrong, there are defiantly some things you want to buy new, such as underwear or fresh strawberries, but many things such as furniture or older electronics can be used just as good as new minus the waste. People throw out furniture into the landfills everyday that still could be used by another person so please consider this before throwing out your own personal furniture that you no longer want. There are many donation centers that will gladly take your used furniture or electronics you no longer use, as long as it’s still in a good usable condition. This also means that there are options for you to choose from when you’re looking to add something in your home. Buying used not only reduces packaging waste and cost, but it also saves perfectly operating items from the landfill. As well, it reduces materials being pulled from ecosystems that are needed to create new furniture and technology. Almost every piece of furniture I have is used and I honestly love it, because I didn’t have to spend so much of my hard earned money on buying things when I moved into my first apartment.

There are so many ways to reduce your waste from the start and, though at times it can be a daunting process, it’s worth every effort. Actions speak louder than words and every little action can change the future towards a path to zero waste. We have to continue to work together to find ways to decrease are impact and I love hearing any ideas you guys have. Check out my other media links down below and always feel free to comment! Keep working Codegreeners!

Clean Cleaning

Clean Cleaning

I’ve said this many times but I’ll say it again: we always need to be mindful of what we are throwing away and what we send down the drain. People tend to forget that whatever chemical or trash they incorporate into their daily routines can affect not only them, but the environment that surrounds them. Needless to say, we need to mindful of what we use, even with the cleaning supplies we use.

I always try to clean with supplies that are not only reusable but also eco-friendly. For dusting and mopping, I use cloth rather than paper towels and disposable rags that usually come with a “Swiffer”. I’ll use a hair tie to wrap the towel around the swiffer when I’m mopping and I use a cloth duster I bought from the company “Reuseit”,  when trying to clean my shelves. This not only saves me money, but also allows me to reduce waste from using disposable materials that I get to instead reuse over and over again.

When it comes to cleaning my drains (especially recently since I was having issues with my drains clogging up), I started using this product called “Earthworm Drain Cleaner” and I really liked it. My drain had backed up so bad the water would sit in my tub (which made shower time pretty unbearable); so having the tub clear after a few days was like an upgrade. This product and others out there focus on getting the job done, while also not having a bunch of harsh chemicals being poured into your local water system. There are also DIY recipes online that I will be trying in the near future on my YouTube channel for different cleaning categories. Let’s work together to be as eco-friendly as possible even when we are cleaning! Check out my media links down below to see other updates of how I’m staying Codegreen!
