Plastic, Our BFF (or Mortal Enemy)

Plastic, Our BFF (or Mortal Enemy)

Some say the invention of plastic was the greatest creation since bread (or Betty White). This new product brought the age of disposable items like containers, plasticware, and even toy trucks. However, people tend to forget the downside of this amazing discovery and its current effects in places such as landfills and parks (to name just a few).

Plastic is currently one of the biggest polluters on this planet and will continue to be, due to its life span and the amount of people that continue to use it. From plastic bags to bottles, your local water sources, wildlife and even some humans are paying the price. However, there are ways to slow down this epidemic and reduce the amount of plastics going into your garbage.

Step One: Rid your life of as much plastic as possible.

There are many ways to do this, and it can be overwhelming to think about them all. But first, start with something simple, like using reusable cloth bags at the grocery store or while shopping rather than using the stores’ plastic bags. Then move onto other things, like eliminating plastic bottles by using a reusable cup, and then you’ll be headed to using reusable containers.

Step Two: Choose Plastics 1 and 2.

If you ever get the chance to look at plastic containers, they will usually have a number between 1 and 7 on them. The number represents the type of plastic material that was used to create that product. You might want to aim for using plastics 1 and 2, because they are the most recyclable plastic materials and are acceptable in more places than are plastics of the other numbers.

Step Three: Recycle those plastics.

In the end, you can recycle most plastic containers. If you cannot completely escape from plastics, most recycling centers take plastics 1-5 and 7. After following steps one and two, this should be the final step in the fight against plastic pollution.

I hope you will join me in the battle against plastic pollution on this earth and that we will be able to defeat this epidemic once and for all. Have a good day and check out my links down below!

Heading Into Year Two

Codenamegreen12

So much happened this past year that I wasn’t even sure how begin this post, but it’s officially been a year since I started CodenameGreen, and I felt a post would be appropriate to celebrate. I’ve learned more about recording, editing, and tweeting then I could have ever imagined and I know I still have so much more to learn for the future. As well, I’ve had to face many tragedies and triumphants in my personal life this year that I’m not even close to the same person I was when I wrote my first CodenameGreen post. However, through the brokenness, confusion, and heartache a person can gain knowledge, beauty, and strength and my goal is to continue to grow and improve CodenameGreen in any way I can. Thank you to those who continue to support me and I’m looking forward to working on new projects and goals for this upcoming year! Check out my other media links down below and don’t forget to live each and every day by CodeGreen.

The Loss of a Sibling

The Loss of a Sibling

I have been wanting to write this post for a long time now, but the idea itself is still so hard to grasp. I still remember the very moment when I was awoken in the middle of night to a phone call from my sister telling me my family was coming over to tell me something. I knew it couldn’t be good due to people knowing that I need my beauty sleep, so I put on my robe and waited for the knock on my door. Nothing in my entire life had prepared me for the words “your brother committed suicide” that night and the pain still haunts my soul. Who could’ve known that my little brother, the person I grew up with, the person I watched Lilo and Stitch with, the person I played hide and seek with, the person I held when he was a baby, could just disappear. I hoped it was just a magic trick, the kind where the person is hiding behind a secret door or that it was just a terrible joke, but it wasn’t. As I woke up the next morning the reality sunk in and I felt a pain like a bullet had just pierced through me. So many emotions just enticed my entire being and I didn’t know whether to feel sad, angry, or confused. It was the hardest thing I’d ever faced in my life.

I remember being at the funeral and wishing to be anywhere else. People you don’t know try to talk to you and ask how your feeling (even though it’s obvious what your feeling) and ask questions like “How could this have happened?” and of course people on Facebook come up with their own versions of the story. The same horrific details played over and over again till you almost gut punch someone. You want a hug but at the same time you want people to leave you alone. The day my brother made that decision, workers lost a co-worker, friends lost a friend, two sisters lost a brother, the family name ended, but worst of all my parents lost their only son.

Now, I’m not writing this article to be negative or to make someone experience what I felt, but rather as a reminder that survival through pain is possible. To this day I don’t approve of my brother’s decision but I’ve made peace with it. The pain that I felt has never gone away, but I’ve learned to live with it and have grown stronger than I ever could’ve imagined. So, to those who have lost a sibling or a loved one I’m here to tell you that it does get better. You will survive through the pain and your heart will grow three sizes, just maybe not today. But keep going and soon you will see that though they may be gone they will always be with you. God loves me and I know my brother is safely under his wing. Goodbye for now little caterpillar until I see you again.

Love,

Your Middle Sister

Be Codegreen for Halloween

Be Codegreen for Halloween

Now’s that time where all Hallow’s eve approaches and soon we will be seeing witches and goblins roaming the streets (well costumes that look like them anyway). And speaking of costumes, we all know how expensive costumes can be, so my advice this Halloween is took stick to the Codegreen way and make your own costume! There are so many ways to get creative and to stay eco-friendly! I suggest looking for materials at the thrift shop or mixing in cloths you already have. If you do go out and buy a costume make sure that you will be able to reuse it or donate it for someone else to wear. I hope you guys have an awesome Halloween while staying within the Codegreen principles! Check out my other media links down below and don’t forget to live each and everyday by Codegreen!:)

Eco DIY’s

Eco DIY’s

Hello, hello I’m finally back with a new blog post (yes I know it’s been awhile I just haven’t been in the mood to write). So here I am and I’ve got some serious business to chat about! Lately everybody has been into the DIY’s on Pinterest and on YouTube which is awesome but have not always been eco-friendly. I’ve seen a lot that require not only a lot of time and materials, but also use materials that aren’t recyclable or even reusable. So in the name of being eco-friendly, we will be focusing on finding DIY’s that focus on these three main principles listed down below.

  1. Pick a DIY that uses the least amount of materials as possible. This allows for less materials for you to have to worry about and reduces the risk of waste. (This also means it’s usually easier to make.)
  2. Pick a DIY that uses materials you already have. This not only saves you money but allows you to stick to the eco-friendly style of “reuse”.
  3. Pick a DIY that uses materials that can be used for multiple things. If you do have to buy a material for something it might as well get plenty of use out of it. (Sticking to that “recycle” principle.)

I will also be finding DIY’s that are non-toxic and allow for the creation of a product that is safe for people and for the environment in which we live. If you have any requests, please let me know and you can check out my media links down below. Hope you have an awesome day!
